After returning home from the hospital, you can count on us for a first home visit within 24 hours. We are on stand-by 24/7 to assist you in word and deed, as long as you need it.
During the home visits we make time for medical follow-up of mother and baby, to discuss your experiences, questions, needs, uncertainties .... These will determine the intensity and duration of the home visits.
What can you expect during a home visit those first days back home?
- Medical check-up of the mother
- Medical check-up of the baby
- Performing the Guthrie blood test to the baby (between 72 and 96 hours after birth)
- Help and advice in the care of the baby
- Help and advice for breastfeeding
- Guidance/support in the experience of the new family
Delivery with short hospital stay
In Flanders, the average hospital stay after childbirth is about four days. In many hospitals this has been reduced to two or three days, in consultation with your gynaecologist and paediatrician. After a Caesarean Section you will stay 4 or 5 days in the hospital.
Actually, you can go home as early as a few hours after birth. The care that you and your baby would get in the hospital is provided by the midwife at your home. Through day 5 you will receive a daily visit from the midwife.
After a shortened hospital stay, your baby will get an additional medical check-up between day 7 and 10 by your GP or paediatrician.
We recommend you to contact the midwife already during your pregnancy so that we can prepare for postnatal care.
